El-hadj Wasiu Kayode Sideeq, the immediate past President of the Islamic Musicians Association of Nigeria (ISMAN), is now the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), of the same association.
In a chat with The Parroters at the weekend, the Islamic crooner, whose stage name is Babanwaka (Islamic Singers’Father) because of his elderly role within the circle of notable Islamic singers, said, “Islamic music is very lucurative for any musician that knows his/her onions.”
According to the ISMAN’s President Emeritus, Islamic musicians are not school dropouts, saying a lot of his association’s members are well educated both in the western and Arabic education.
Buttressing this point, the Mushin, Lagos born guy in his 40s revealed his own academic pursuit, disclosing that he trained as a journalist with specialisation in broadcast journalism at the Moshood Abiola Polythechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital City.
“Having attended Odu Abore Memorial Primary School @ Iyalla Street Mushin and Vet Land Grammar School, Oko Oba in Agege, I proceeded to do my Higher School Certificate (HSC), at Anwar Ul-Islam College, Oniwaya, also in Agege.
“And having been convinced about the importance of education in any man’s worldly endeavour, I sought and gained admission to the famous Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), at Ojere, Abeokuta, the capital city of Ogun State where I studied Mass Communication with Broadcasting as my area of specialisation,” the velvet voice crooner submitted.
The popular singer, who is married with lovely children, however added that, “as a matter of personal choice, I have not taken any chieftaincy title, but I can boast of many awards both at home and abroad in my carrier as a musician. I won awards in America and Canada.”
On when and how he started singing, Sideeq has this to say: “I started in the 80’s when I was in secondary school via the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN). We used to organise MSSN day in schools and Islamic music competition, quizzes competition and impromptu speeches competition were always part of the programmes across various schools. I can say I cut my musical teeth during those periods.”
The portably built crooner disclosed that he released his first album in 1988 to Leader Records of blessed memory.
“I have waxed about 30 albums on video and audio. I don’t discriminate against any Islamic organization. As an Islamic musician, I belong to all organizations so far they are Islamic oriented,” he volunteered.
“Meanwhile I was the immediate past president of the Islamic Musicians Association of Nigeria, presently I hold the baton of the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the association,” he disclosed further.
On his performance on stage, Babanwakastated that, “only my teeming fans can judge that while I believe that I perform relatively well on stage as well as in Video.”
On how lucrative is Islamic music, Sideeq ssmiled before saying, “to be candid with you, without mincing words music, in any form, is very lucrative if the musician knows the nitty-gritty of what it takes to be a musician.”
And if the person knows his worth and his onions, ISMAN’s BoT Chairman said, “the sky is the beginning for him and not the limit.”
